Before looking at ideas, empty the cupboard and be honest about what lives there: school shoes, coats, the hoover and ironing board, carrier bags, the dog lead, sports kit. The right design follows directly from that list. A family of five with a gravel drive needs something very different from a couple who mainly need somewhere for suitcases and Christmas boxes.
Pull-out drawer banks use the full depth
The deepest part of the triangle is wasted behind ordinary doors, because nobody crawls to the back. Full-height pull-out drawers on proper runners bring the entire depth out to you. Two or three graduated pull-outs will swallow shoes, bags and cleaning kit, and everything stays visible and reachable.
Angled doors and proper coat hanging
A tall section near the highest point takes a rail at coat height, with the door cut to follow the stair line. Add a shallow shelf above the rail for hats and gloves and a low drawer below for shoe care and spare laces. This suits Victorian and 1930s hallways where the staircase runs straight from the front door.
The boot-room treatment
Where the hallway allows, the under-stairs run can borrow the logic of a
boot room
: a bench seat with shoe drawers beneath, hooks or a short rail behind, and closed cupboards for everything you do not want on show. It turns the daily in-and-out of a family into something that tidies itself.
A desk nook that disappears
The under-stairs void can take a compact desk with shelving above and cable management built in, either open or behind doors that close the working day away. It will not replace a full
home office
, but for laptop work and household admin it uses space that was doing nothing.
The hidden utility cupboard
The least glamorous and possibly most useful option: a fitted cupboard designed around the hoover, mop, ironing board and cleaning caddy, with a socket inside for charging a cordless vacuum. Everything has a slot, so everything goes back.
